History
Settled for over 10,000 years.
The Komsa culture — named after Mount Komsa in Alta — left traces of some of the first people in northern Norway: hunter-gatherers from around 10,000 years BC.
At Hjemmeluft, a few kilometres from the centre, more than 6,000 rock carvings have been found. They have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985 and are now part of an open-air museum.
